This study arises from recent research within the context of a new Sicily, where the various ethnic groups inhabiting it have become EFL users who have different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and appropriate the English without necessarily conforming to its grammatical and lexical norms. This phenomenon places Sicily in a complex position with regard to the construction of EFL speakers and English itself becomes the language that is used for everyday conversations and social interactions within and outside the communities in Sicily. AbstractThis chapter describes the research design applied in the research project The Emigrant Communities of Latvia: National Identity, Transnational Relations and Diaspora Politics, which forms the empirical core of this volume. It discusses this methodology in the context of other migration studies and major surveys on migration. The global financial and economic crisis as well as post-socialist transition means a similar general framework for socioeconomic and spatial development in different countries. Their migration systems react in different ways on such externally caused incidents, even in slightly comparable contexts. He Is All American Now”: Italian–Americans in the Italian Campaign of World War II

This chapter aims to analyze the case of the Italian–Americans' participation in World War II. It is an interesting case study to focus on issues connected to the processes of constructing multifaceted identities that characterize ethnicity. In 1943, in view of the invasion of Italy, the US asked Italian–Americans to fight against their ancestor country. Nonetheless, they were encouraged to exploit their idealistic roots and their “ethnical” competence to facilitate a “good occupation.” Biographies of Italian–Americans that were in Italy will help us to examine the interplay between Italianness and Americanization in war experience.

The obstacles that often accompany remigration, planned and imagined as a ‘homecoming’, are seldom the topic of investigation in migration studies. Returning is not always an ‘easy game’. To explore this aspect of remigration, this chapter intends to focus on narratives of return produced mainly by so-called co-ethnic migrants who moved back to Croatia and the Czech Republic during the past two decades of post-socialist transformation. The empirical base of the chapter draws on the experiences and struggles accompanying remigration, and of arrival and acceptance in the respective society as described by returnees in biographical interviews. The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions

Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. The empirical results show that the main determinants of the departures are several root causes at the departing African countries, underlining the importance of fighting human smuggling networks.
